Donald Henderson flowers
An 81-year-old villager in a golf cart was arrested at Lake Sumter Landing for driving under the influence of Winn-Dixie.
Emergency personnel were called around 4:30 p.m. Friday after Donald Henderson Flowers of Chapin Court 1526 in Sunset Pointe Village fell in the store’s parking lot, according to an arrest report from the Sumter County Sheriff’s Office.
EMS found the Kansas City native on the ground and found that he had scratched his knees and elbows from the fall. Flowers declined medical attention, got back in his golf cart, and hit the sidewalk near the Winn-Dixie liquor store. When the local MPs arrived, Flowers had a bottle of vodka in hand but tried to hide it in a compartment on the golf cart.
Flowers was unsteady when he got out of the golf cart. A deputy took the golf cart key and placed it on the roof of the vehicle. The MPs asked Flowers if he had been drinking. He claimed he had “two beers”.
Flowers agreed to take field sobriety exercises, but said he may have trouble after breaking his ankle while playing golf in 2019 and undergoing surgery to fix it. He said the ankle is still healing and he sometimes uses a stick when walking. He struggled through the exercises and had to sing the alphabet because he couldn’t recite it properly.
He provided two breath samples, both of which recorded a blood alcohol content of 0.171.
He was taken into custody and posted to the Sumter County Detention Center. He was released after depositing a $ 1,000 bond.
