Here are just a few current highlights from our school communities:
Riley Atkinson, Senior at Shawnee Mission East, is the 2021 Kansas Student Journalist of the Year recognized by the Kansas Scholastic Press Association. Atkinson is the fourth journalism student in the past five years at SM East to be named State Journalist of the Year. Each award winner was tutored by instructor Dow Tate.
Crystal Brower, a kindergarten teacher at Shawanoe Elementary, and Natalie Johnson-Berry, an English teacher at Shawnee Mission North, will soon be honored by the Kansas State Department of Education. You are this year’s nominees for SMSD Kansas Teacher of the Year. The Region III Awards Committee will hold a virtual recognition ceremony for the Kansas Teacher of the Year (KTOY) on March 28th. Teachers nominated for the KTOY Award 2021 were automatically nominated for the 2022 program.
SMSD is named Healthiest Worker Award 2021 by the Kansas City Business Journal. The magazine states that the 30 employers being honored made the health and wellbeing of their workers a priority in a health-focused year. This follows on from SMSD, which received a 2021 Healthy KC Workplace certification.
Johnson County’s Arts Council recognized 19 Shawnee Mission students from the Shawnee Mission School District as finalists in the 2021 Shooting Star Awards. The Shooting Stars program recognizes young artists and art educators for their artistic achievements with college scholarships, prizes, and fees. Since 1997, the Shooting Stars program has recognized over 1,000 high school graduates for their artistic excellence and contributions to their community. The Shawnee Mission Northwest Lady Cougars are the Masters of the Kansas State High School Activities Association (2021 6A). The girls’ basketball team won the top prize with a final score of 61-53 against Topeka High School and ended their season unbeaten 23-0.
Ishya Bhavsar, an eighth grader from Indian Hills Middle School, is the 2021 Johnson County Spelling Bee winner. She was given the opportunity to rise to become the state spelling bee, due in March in Wichita.
Missouri River Relief recognized the Shawnee Mission School District and its former sustainability leader with the “Inspiring the Next Generation” award. The honor is given to educators who strive to connect students and teachers with the Missouri River and develop a deeper understanding of the river’s governance.
The National Merit Program named 13 students from the Shawnee Mission School District as National Merit Finalists. You will be competing in the National Merit Competition for the National Merit Scholarship Awards. A list of the award winners can be found here.
