KANSAS CITY, Mon – Grandparents, you can hug your grandchildren again once you’re vaccinated.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention issued post-vaccination guidelines Monday. The update gives fully vaccinated people the ability to gather without masks. Fully vaccinated people can also hang out with low-risk people such as children.
Things are also looking good for the Kansas City hospitalization.
A metro hospital said for the first time in a year it had no COVID patients in the intensive care unit. St. Joseph Medical Center in southern Kansas City is celebrating the milestone. Trish Feilmeier, chief nursing officer, said they could have guests in intensive care on Sunday night for the first time in a year.
“Our COVID numbers have dropped significantly, and this weekend was the first time since March 2020 that we have not had a COVID patient in our intensive care unit,” said Feilmeier. “So it’s really like seeing the light at the end of the tunnel.”
The CDC also released new guidelines on Monday that allow vaccinated individuals in small groups to be in close contact with unvaccinated individuals such as family members.
The Jackson County Health Department sees this as a good sign, but is still waiting for vaccine shipments from the state. Ray Dlugolecki, deputy director of public health, said he asked the state every time they called if they had more vaccines.
“Right now that percentage is below 14% here in Jackson County. So at this point in time there is only such a small percentage of people that this would actually be the case. So we say that the mask mandate will still be in force, ”said Dlugolecki.
In Johnson County, the director of the Department of Health, Dr. Samni Areola that people need to remain vigilant even though cases have decreased and people are slowly being vaccinated.
“Right now, based on this vaccination level, our message remains that people are very careful and the proposed gathering, I’ve read it, be sure again that it is not an indiscriminate gathering,” Areola said. “It’s controlled. It limits the number of people we interact with and avoids indoor spaces. These are still important. “
Dlugolecki said he hopes more deliveries of the vaccine will come to locations on the subway. He expects deliveries to increase from March 15th.
The CDC claims that if you haven’t been vaccinated you should still wear a mask, practice social distancing, and even try to meet outdoors if possible.
