Just because DeSean Jackson has ties to Andy Reid doesn’t mean the Kansas City Chiefs need to sign him in 2021.
You know the drill, Chiefs fans. Whenever any key player is set to be a free agent, we immediately discuss whether or not that player would be a good fit for the Kansas City Chiefs. When a player is set to be a free agent and played under Andy Reid at some point in their career, then it’s an easier article for us to write because we can play off of that angle.
Sometimes it makes sense for the Chiefs to bring in former players from Reid’s years as the Eagles head coach, but in the case of whether or not the team should reunite him with DeSean Jackson, the answer should be a resounding no.
The reason this is even being discussed is because an article from James Rapien of SI All Bengals listed the Chiefs as an option for Jackson in 2021.
Sammy Watkins and DeMarcus Robinson are both set to become free agents. Can you imagine the Chiefs adding more speed? Jackson could reunite with Andy Reid and play with the best quarterback in the NFL.
A trio of Tyreek Hill, Mecole Hardman and Jackson would overwhelm opposing defenses.
Jackson wouldn’t have to contribute a ton during the regular season, but could certainly make an impact. He wouldn’t face many [if any] double teams because he’d be on the field with Hill and Travis Kelce.
The Kansas City Chiefs don’t need to sign DeSean Jackson.
First off, Jackson hasn’t played in all 16 regular-season games since 2013 and has appeared in just eight over the last two years. The last time that Jackson had over 1,000 yards receiving was in 2016 when he grabbed 56 receptions for 1,005 yards and four touchdowns. He just hasn’t been the same kind of player in recent years.
Yes, the Chiefs are going to lose Demarcus Robinson and Sammy Watkins, but there are better options to bring in over the offseason than that of an aging Jackson, who had just 236 yards receiving in 2020. He’s 34 years old and has proven in the past few years that he can’t stay healthy. The Chiefs already had a younger version of that in Watkins, so why bring in someone similar?
There’s a need for a wide receiver or two this spring, but the Chiefs would be better off drafting receivers and maybe signing someone like Kendrick Bourne rather than giving one last chance to Jackson.
What do you think, Chiefs fans? Yay or nay on DeSean Jackson?
