Hawaiian Bros Island Grill, a Belton, Missouri-based restaurant chain, will hold a grand opening for its Shawnee location on Tuesday, March 16.
The Shawnee store, which used to be the former Boston Market at 11600 Shawnee Mission Parkway, will be the restaurant’s fifth location in metropolitan Kansas City and the third in Kansas.
Scott Ford, president of Hawaiian Bros, said the company estimates Shawnee’s business can handle 250 to 300 vehicles on the property an hour.
“We’re expecting really big things here,” said Ford. “We have spent a lot of time designing and developing this store to meet what we believe is very high demand from this community.”
Ford said various aspects of the Shawnee franchise’s layout were designed with the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic in mind, including:
- A two-lane drive through with a window for paying and a window for receiving your order.
- Parallel roadside pickup parking spaces located near a roadside exit from the production line.
- In-store self-order kiosks for those who want to skip the line. (The kiosks also pull up the last order from regular customers after they steal their card for a quick experience.)
The main change customers will see, however, is what Ford calls “order pods”.
Instead of ordering at a traditional cash register, Hawaiian Bros employees called “tour guides” will guide customers unfamiliar with the brand through the menu, Ford said.
Ford said part of the reason Hawaiian Bros is switching to tour guides instead of cashiers is to explain History of the Hawaiian Lunch Dish.
Lunch dates back to the 1880s when workers on pineapple and sugar plantations ate leftover meat and rice for lunch.
“We have a lot of people who are new to Hawaiian Bros and most of the mainland is new to Hawaiian Plate Lunch,” said Ford. which we have.”
Hawaiian Bros has yet to decide whether existing stores will convert to the new procedures, Ford said.
However, future locations, such as the upcoming Overland Park Store near 137th Street and Metcalf Avenue, will implement these new changes, he said.
“[Shawnee] It’s really our first look at a lot of our new processes we’ve designed and developed, “said Ford.” It’s just a really great community and intersection – it’s going to be a lot of fun. ”
